The markets are closed today for the US Memorial Day Holiday.  Our office will remain open.

Friday was a mostly negative day for our markets.  Harvest corn down 2 1/2, harvest soybeans closed down 4 3/4, harvest winter wheat closed down 2 and harvest spring wheat closed up 6 3/4.  No overnight trade with the markets closed today.  Oil closed up $0.33 on Friday at $61.53 per barrel.  It is weaker in trading this morning with it now valued at $61.31 per barrel.  Our dollar traded between a low of $0.722 US and a high of $0.729 US on Friday with it closing out at $0.728 US.  With some choppy trading in the overnight session it is currently valued this morning at $0.729 US.

On Friday President Trump talked about increasing tariffs with the European Union up to 50% to start on June 1st as he was disappointed with the how the trade talks are progressing between them.  This pulled both the stock markets and our commodity markets lower.  With the long weekend looming it was also another reason for the speculative funds to take some risk off the table.  Then over the weekend President Trump had a phone call with the EU leader and has postponed the new tariffs.  This should hopefully bring some positive vibes to the markets when they reopen tonight.

With the holiday today in the US the Weekly Crop Progress Report will not be released until tomorrow.  This week’s report will include the first crop ratings for the spring planted crops.  It seems with the favourable planting weather received this spring in large parts of the US we most likely will see strong numbers in tomorrow’s report.

Last week was a mixed week for our markets.  Spot corn closed down $4 per tonne with this year’s harvest down $3 per tonne and next year’s harvest even.  Spot soybeans closed up $5 per tonne with harvest soybeans up $10 per tonne and next year’s harvest up $7 per tonne.  Spring wheat was down $1 per tonne for this year with next year’s harvest ended up even.  Winter wheat ended up even for this year’s harvest and up $4 per tonne for next year.
