Tuesday was a mixed day for our markets. Harvest corn closed down 1, harvest soybeans closed down 9 1/2, spot winter wheat closed up 4 and spot spring wheat closed down 2 1/2. In the overnight trade all of our markets have made it back to the positive side. Oil closed down $3.22 yesterday at $89.38 per barrel. It is stronger in trading this morning with it now priced at $90.46. Our dollar started out yesterday morning at $0.704 US and with some choppy trading has strengthened just a bit since then. This morning it is currently valued at $0.705 US.
The soybean market gained back about one third of the losses from Monday yesterday. It looks like the market over reacted on Monday to the disappointing news that China was not eliminating the 10% tariff on soybeans being imported from the US. With harvest progressing in the US and the lack of increased Chinese buyers this market is looking for direction and is looking for any reason to drive prices one way or another.
Today the USDA releases their Quarterly Stocks Report. This is usually not a major market mover however we know that the USDA has been known to surprise the marketplace with some unexpected numbers in the past. Both corn and soybean stocks are expected to be reduced from previous projections but not enough to drive prices.
Recent excessive moisture levels in the US Corn Belt are slowing down the current harvest for both corn and soybeans. The current weather forecast is bringing some large rains this week which will bring the harvest to a standstill until the weather pattern changes. This could result in lower yields due to some flooding risks in some growing areas.
In our area the soybean harvest is well under way with farmers being selective in what fields are ready to combine with other fields still a week or two away from being ready. We have received possibly the longest stretch since the spring plantings without a major rain event. It is nice to see the ground finally drying which should assist our farmers that are planting winter wheat this fall. If you are planting winter wheat prices for next year’s harvest are still attractive. Give us a call anytime to discuss your forward marketing options.
