Monday was a mixed day for our markets. Harvest corn closed up 1 1/4, harvest soybeans closed even, harvest winter wheat closed down 10 and harvest spring wheat down 6 1/4. In the overnight trade, corn is negative and soybeans and wheat are positive. Oil closed up $2.80 yesterday at $86.20 per barrel. It is stronger in trading again this morning with it now priced at $87.87. Our dollar had a high of 0.722 overnight and has fallen since hitting a low of 0.720; it’s currently valued at 0.720.
Yesterday’s crop progress report showed corn’s good-to-excellent rating at 57%, unchanged from last week. Still well below the 69% rating from this time last year. Soybeans’ good-to-excellent rating decreased 2% from 60% last week to 58% this week. Also, below last year’s rating this time last year at 65%.
The average temperatures across the US corn belt for the next 10-15 days are predicted to be above average and with little rainfall. Some parts of the corn belt have had a dry second half of July and are already struggling with soil moisture. If this turns out to be accurate, it’s less than ideal for grain filling and could continue to support corn and soybean prices.
Headlines over the last 48 hours have announced that Turkey has a plan to help Russia find an alternate route through the Black Sea Region to export their grain. Russia has also moved to the Baltic as Ukraine drone attacks are limiting their access through the Black Sea. Russian analysts are predicting that September wheat export could be as low as 50% from last year’s exports. If this is found to be true, it’ll be the lowest amount of wheat exports for Russia since 2010.
