Monday was a positive day for our markets. Harvest corn closed up 8 1/2, harvest soybeans closed up 4 3/4, harvest winter wheat closed up 11 3/4 and harvest spring wheat closed up 5 1/4. In the overnight trade all of our markets are back on the negative side. Oil closed up $0.67 yesterday at $80.34 per barrel. It is weaker in trading this morning with it now priced at $79.54. Our dollar has traded between a low of $0.711 US and a high of $0.713 US over the last 24 hours. This morning it is right in the middle of the range with it currently valued at $0.712 US.
Our markets rallied yesterday after starting the day on the negative side. Soybeans closed higher to close just above the 50-day moving average. They were supported by purchases by China of new crop soybeans with estimates of up to 1 million tonnes purchased over the last few trading days. This was great to see as the weather forecast bringing precipitation to the soybeans which are now in the pod setting stage should really be a negative for prices. With prices lower this morning maybe the market is more concerned with the growing weather once again.
Managed money was seen as increasing their long positions (looking for prices to go up) early last week and then decreasing them as the week progressed. This helped lead to the negative pricing that we saw for most of last week in our markets. With the new month started we will see managed money reposition their reserves and this could lead to more price swings either way in our markets.
The USDA released their Weekly Crop Progress Report yesterday. The good to excellent rating for their corn crop decreased 2% week over week to come in at 61%. Last year at this time the crop had a 73% good to excellent rating. They also reported that 90% of the crop is now silking. This compares to 86% at this time last year and the 5-year average of 87%.
For their soybean crop the good to excellent rating was unchanged from last week at 63%. Last year at this time the soybean crop had a 69% good to excellent rating. They also reported that 62% of this crop is now setting pods. This compares to 56% at this time last year and the 5-year average of 55%.
The winter wheat harvest has reached 86% complete. This compares to 85% at this time last year and the 5-year average of 86%.
For spring wheat, the good to excellent rating increased 2% from the previous week to come in at 55%. Last year at this time the crop had a 48% good to excellent rating.
This report is slightly bearish for our markets. Most analysts would have been looking for weaker ratings for all of our crops. The small decrease in corn, no change for soybeans and increase in spring wheat are all somewhat of a surprise. For winter wheat no changes with harvest nearing the end.
