Friday was a mixed day for our markets.  Spot corn closed down 3/4, spot soybeans closed down 3, spot winter wheat closed up 2 and spot spring wheat closed up 5.  In the overnight trade all of our markets are on the positive side.  Oil closed up $0.37 on Friday at $56.52 per barrel.  It is stronger in trading again this morning with it now valued at $57.08 per barrel.  Our dollar traded between a low of $0.724 US and a high of $0.727 US on Friday with it closing out at $0.725 US.  It has strengthened a bit this morning with it currently valued at $0.726 US.

Soybeans closed negative every day last week for the nearby month on the CBOT.  As we talked about last week there is some uncertainty on the volume of sales to China under the yet unsigned ‘Trade Pact’ between the US and China.  The market has not responded recently when any sale announcements have been made as it seems it is now considered old news and that probably China will purchase the 12 million tonnes with more questions really on when the purchases will be finished.  The big elephant in the room is the positive growing weather in Brazil.  The likelihood of another record large crop is becoming stronger with each day passing.

The corn market ended up 3 cents a bushel higher for the week on the nearby market after closing 3 of the 5 days on the negative side.  Nothing really new in this market to drive prices either way.  The favourable growing weather in South America is a negative for prices with the strong export pace this year out of the US the most supportive factor.

Last week was a mostly negative week for our markets.  Spot corn closed up $1 per tonne with next year’s harvest even.  Soybeans continued their recent negative ways with this year’s harvest down $10 per tonne and next year’s harvest down $2 per tonne.  Spring wheat was up $1 per tonne on both the spot market and for next year’s harvest.  Winter wheat was down $7 per tonne on the spot market and $5 per tonne for next year’s harvest.
