Thursday was a negative day for our markets. Harvest corn closed down 1 3/4, harvest soybeans closed down 10, spot winter wheat closed down 3 1/4 and spot spring wheat closed down 4 1/4. In the overnight trade corn and soybeans are now positive with the wheat sector still on the negative side. Oil closed up $3.21 yesterday at $91.49 per barrel. It is weaker in trading this morning with it now priced at $90.69. Our dollar started out yesterday morning at $0.701 US then went up to $0.704 US late in the trading day. It has pulled back since then with it currently valued this morning at $0.702 US.
Our markets had another negative day yesterday as they get ready to see what the USDA will bring forward today. Soybeans were the big loser with the thoughts that today’s report will not bring much news for this commodity.
Projected yields are of course the big thing that the analysts will be looking at today. For corn the average trade estimate has the yield coming in at 177.6 bushels per acre. This compares to last month’s USDA’s projection of 178.5 bushels per acre. Last year their corn crop had an average yield of 186.5 bushels per acre. We should note that the average estimates range from a low of 173.2 bushels per acre up to 182.1 bushels per acre. The so called experts have a very divergent view of what could occur today.
For the soybean yield the average trade estimate is 52.9 bushels per acre which is just above the USDA’s projection from September of 52.8 bushels per acre. Last year their soybean crop had an average yield of 53 bushels per acre.
With the report coming out today at noon we should be prepared for whatever the USDA will throw at us. There is potential for our markets to go either way today. If you would like to take some risk off the table before the report or set some targets to take advantage of any short term price gains give us a call.
It is looking like we will have nice harvest weather over the weekend and our elevator will be open. Have a happy Thanksgiving Holiday.
Friday’s thought: Thanksgiving is the holiday that the people who did not have to prepare the meal are the most thankful!
