Thursday was a mixed day for our markets. Harvest corn closed down 1/2, harvest soybeans closed down 3 1/4, spot winter wheat closed up 4 3/4 and spot spring wheat also closed up 4 3/4. In the overnight trade corn and soybeans are negative with the wheat sector still on the positive side. Oil closed down $0.78 yesterday at $102.00 per barrel. It is stronger in trading this morning with it now priced at $104.25. Our dollar had a low yesterday morning before noon of $0.714 US and has trended higher since then. This morning it is currently valued at $0.716 US.
The wheat market got a little bounce yesterday on some rumours that Chinese buyers were looking at purchases from the US. HRS spring wheat had closed negative for 13 consecutive days with the negative streak in winter wheat almost as bad. On a technical side the analysts are saying this market is oversold and is due for a bounce back but as we all know the market does what the market does and it never has to do what any of us think it should do.
The soybean market is being pulled down this week by weakness in the soybean meal market. It seems that Managed Money has only recently started liquidating their long position in this market. They have been liquidating their long position in the soybean market for the last couple of months. This liquidation first helped to pull down soybean prices and now with soybean meal prices pulling back this is putting further pressure on soybean prices.
Nothing new in the corn market this week. US harvest is progressing and final yields will probably be less than the USDA has projected. European Union production was lower this year and they will need to import increased amounts. Shipments out of Ukraine are of course limited due to their war with Russia. These three factors should be supportive prices however they keep going down as Managed Money continues to liquidate portions of their long position. The trend is not our friend in this market.
Locally the soybean harvest is getting close to the finish line. Corn harvest is well underway with moistures ranging from 21% up to 30%. Strong yields are being reported and we expect this to continue. Have a great harvest weekend!
