Thursday was a mixed day for our markets.  Harvest corn closed down 4 1/4, harvest soybeans closed down 14, spot winter wheat closed up 3/4 and spot spring wheat closed up 3 1/4.  In the overnight trade all of our markets are on the negative side.  Oil closed up $2.40 yesterday at $90.52 per barrel.  It is stronger in trading again this morning with it now priced at $91.01.  Our dollar started out yesterday morning at $0.716 US and then trended lower going all the way down to $0.710 US in the overnight trading.  It has bounced back just a bit this morning with it currently valued at $0.711 US.

Another disappointing day for our row crops with soybeans leading the way down.  Early in the trading day they were up 8 cents before the negative side took over once again.  The thinking is that Managed Money once again was large sellers and this helped to push prices lower.  Soybeans have now traded lower for 9 consecutive trading days.  Planting is progressing well in Brazil with over 50% of their crop now planted and this is bringing additional negative pressure to the market.

Corn prices have fallen $1.10 per bushel on the CBOT since September 2nd.  Managed Money liquidation of their near record long position since that time has helped to push markets lower.  Export sales are lower this year than last year in the US and recent reports of higher yields by StoneX are also a big negative for the market.  This market is searching for something major to turn around the negative trend.

The wheat market stabilised yesterday but has fallen back again this morning.  This is even with reports out of China overnight that they are making some purchases of US wheat.  This would go towards the $17 billion worth of agricultural purchases that they are supposed to be making with the trade deal that they have supposedly agreed to earlier this year with the US.  It is a very poor sign this morning that this market is negative even with the talk of Chinese purchases.

Locally the harvest is almost rapped up for soybeans and the corn harvest is progressing well.  There has been some inconsistency with test weights on the corn side however yield talk has been very strong.  We are open all weekend so keep those combines rolling.

Friday’s thought: Do the best you can until you know better.  Then when you know better, do better!
