Wednesday was another negative day for our markets.  Spot corn closed down 1/4, spot soybeans closed down 14 3/4, spot winter wheat closed down 3 3/4 and spot spring wheat closed down 4 1/2.  The markets do not open until 9:30 am this morning after being closed for the New Year’s holiday.  Oil closed down $0.53 on Wednesday at $57.42 per barrel.  It is lower in trading this morning with it now valued at $57.32 per barrel.  Our dollar traded between a low of $0.728 US and a high of $0.730 US on Wednesday with it closing out at $0.728 US.  It is a bit stronger this morning with it now currently valued at $0.729 US.

Soybean prices have fallen for 4 straight trading sessions on the CBOT.  They are now back at mid-October levels as they continued to be pressured with the favourable growing weather that is presently occurring in Brazil.  Their soybean crop just keeps getting what seem to be almost optimum weather conditions and the likelihood of a new record crop becomes more locked in with every passing day.  The trend is not our fried in this market and it is somewhat hard to find any reason for this trend to be broken at least in the short term.

The wheat market has been trading somewhat like the soybean market.  After a small rally just before Christmas it has traded lower for 4 straight trading sessions.  This market traded higher when bombings in Ukraine were holding up exports and then traded lower when it looked like the peace process was moving forward.  With delays in reaching an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine this market is struggling to decide which way prices should go.  Of course the traders then look at the record large crops this year around the world and push prices lower.

As the calendar has now turned to 2026 we can only hope for a better year ahead.  Prices will go up and prices will go down.  All that most farmers are looking for is a nice return at the end of the day.  To accomplish this we must be able to calculate our cost of production then we can easily figure out at what level you need to sell to make a profit.  Sounds simple and it really does not need to be too complicated.  Give us a call anytime and we can assist you with this endeavour!
