Friday was a mostly positive day for our markets.  Spot corn closed up 1 1/2, spot soybeans closed down 1 1/2, spot winter wheat closed up 4 3/4 and spot spring wheat closed up 1 3/4.  In the overnight trade all of our markets are now positive.  Oil closed down $0.21 yesterday at $65.21 per barrel.  It is stronger in trading this morning with it now valued at $67.39 per barrel.  Our dollar had a low yesterday morning before noon of $0.729 US and has traded mostly higher since then.  This morning it is currently valued at $0.732 US.

Soybean oil surged yesterday to a new high on the current trading month.  It was supported with anticipation that the new guidelines sent to the White House this week by the EPA will bring in record high level of bio diesel blend requirements for the next couple of years.  This support for soybean oil of course supported the soybean market.  Unfortunately, soybean meal was a negative for the soybean market as meal prices closed lower.  The soybean market ended up trading in a very wide 27 cent range to end up just negative for the day.  Of course, this market is waiting to see if China will step up and make some increased purchases of US soybeans.

The wheat market is gaining some support from some extreme temperatures that the current crop in India will be seeing over the month of March.  If the weather forecast is correct and their crop gets reduced it will change the current year from India projected to export wheat into an import nation.  We should also note that India is currently the largest wheat producer in the world.  This is something worth watching going forward and could be a major changer for the wheat market.

Managed money for the week ending Tuesday February 17th continue to hold a short position (looking for prices to go down) in the corn and wheat markets.  For soybeans they once again increased their long position (looking for prices to go up).  Remember as they change their positions over time they can have major effects on price swings.

Friday’s thought: Stay away from people who think you are arguing every time you try to express yourself!
