Thursday was a positive day for our markets.  Harvest corn closed up 6, harvest soybeans closed up 22 3/4, spot winter wheat closed up 12 1/2 and spot spring wheat closed up 14 1/2.    In the overnight trade all of our markets have fallen onto the negative side.  Oil closed up $6.43 yesterday at $102.48 per barrel.  It is weaker in trading this morning with it now priced at $99.11.  Our dollar started out yesterday morning at $0.724 US and has trended lower since then.  This morning it is currently valued at $0.721 US.

Soybeans led our markets higher yesterday reaching new harvest highs on the CBOT.  They were supported with three major factors:

  • The higher price of crude oil supported the soybean oil market.
  • China has purchased roughly 1 million tonnes of new crop soybeans this week and is expected to keep purchasing before President Xi visits the US on September 24th.
  • Managed money continues to increase their long position (looking for prices to go up) in this market.

The wheat market supposedly responded to increased bombings between Russia and Ukraine which included a soybean processing plant in Ukraine owned by Bunge.  There are also reports out of Russia that they will not negotiate a new Black Sea Shipping Corridor at this time.  If they hold this position it should be supportive for prices going forward.

The corn market seems to be waiting for the USDA report today to give it some direction.

What should we expect today from the USDA?

  • The average trade guess is a corn yield at 178.1 bushels per acre. In August the USDA had it pegged at 180.7 bushels per acre.  Last year at this time it was at 186.5 bushels per acre.
  • The average trade guess projects a soybean yield at 52.5 bushels per acre. This is down from the 52.7 bushels per acre the USDA reported in August.  Last year at this time the yield projection was 53 bushels per acre.
  • It is anybody’s guess what the USDA will do concerning grain shipments out of the Black Sea region.

All in all we could see some major volatility in prices after the report is released today at noon.  With prices lower across the board at this time it seems like the marketplace is bracing for some negative action.  This morning might be a great time to take some risk off the table or at least set some targets that could take advantage of any strong short term positive price swing.  Give us a call if you would like to discuss your farms marketing situation for the coming year.

Friday’s thought: Be thankful for some of the struggles in your life.  Not only have they made you stronger, but they have also taught you how to be brave during your darkest storm.
