Monday was a negative day for our markets. Harvest corn closed down 1, harvest soybeans closed down 15 1/4, spot winter wheat closed down 9 and spot spring wheat closed down 7 1/2. In the overnight trade corn and the wheat sector are negative with soybeans back on the positive side. Oil closed down $1.51 yesterday at $101.76 per barrel. It is weaker again this morning with it now priced at $101.28. Our dollar has traded between a low of $0.712 US and a high of $0.714 US over the last 24 hours. This morning it is in the middle of the range with it currently valued at $0.713 US.
Soybean prices fell hard yesterday as a reaction to the surprise re-election of the current Brazilian President. The market reacted with yearly lows for their currency and this put pressure on soybean prices due to trade implications of the lower prices of their currency. The only positive thing for soybeans yesterday was that they closed 14 cents off their low for the day. It is nice to see that prices are positive this morning which hopefully will mean that the election will only have the one day negative affect on soybean prices.
The USDA released their Weekly Crop Progress Report yesterday. The corn harvest increased 16% week over week to come in at 60% complete. This is still behind their 5 year average of 66% harvested.
For soybeans the harvest increased 15% week over week to come in at 79% complete. This is just ahead of their 5 year average of 77% harvested.
Plantings of their winter wheat crop increased 13% week over week to come in at 76% complete. This is just behind their 5 year average of 77% planted.
This report should be considered mostly neutral for our crops. Although the harvest is progressing well it is somewhat surprising that the corn harvest is still behind its 5 year average.
