Tuesday was another negative day for our markets.  Harvest corn closed down 5, harvest soybeans closed down 5 1/4, spot winter wheat closed down 12 and spot spring wheat closed down 8 1/4.  In the overnight trade all of our markets remain on the negative side.  Oil closed down $5.84 yesterday at $97.82 per barrel.  It is stronger this morning with it now priced at $98.94.  Our dollar started out the day yesterday at $ 0.712 US and is once again valued at the same amount this morning.

Another disappointing day for our markets yesterday.  Soybeans have closed lower for the last 7 trading days and 9 of the last 10 trading days.  This negative trend is in spite of continued Chinese purchases over the last 5 trading days that have totalled over 105 million bushels of sales.  This market is being overwhelmed by the current pace of the US harvest.  Remember the USDA is projecting both a new record yield and total record production of soybeans this year in the US.

With the ideal harvest weather over most of the US Corn Belt their harvest is expected to progress greatly this week.  The soybean harvest will likely be above the 5 year average rate next week and the corn harvest is expected to catch up to the 5 year average harvest.

Locally the soybean harvest is back in full gear this week.  The corn harvest is also underway for some of our farmers.  Bring on the crops as we are accepting both.

With the recent negative swing in prices we are getting many questions on what to do with production that is over and above any sales the farmer has previously made.  There is no one answer as each producer’s situation is different.  Bottom line is that prices are still historically strong even though they are well below the highs from this summer.  Give us a call anytime to discuss your situation and we will do our best to help you with a marketing strategy going forward.
