Friday was a mixed day for our markets. Harvest corn closed down 4 1/2, harvest soybeans closed down 5 3/4, spot winter wheat closed up 1/4 and spot spring wheat closed up 1 1/4. In the overnight trade all of our markets have made it onto the positive side. Oil closed down $1.76 on Friday at $91.11 per barrel. It is weaker in trading again this morning with it now priced at $90.38. Our dollar traded between a low of $0.701 US and a high of $0.703 US on Friday with it closing out right in the middle of the range. With some choppy trading in the overnight sessions it has come down to $0.701 US.
The soybean year end crush data was released for the US on Friday and it came in at a new record for the year at 2.645 billion bushels. This was 10 million bushels lower than previous USDA projections but still shows steady growth in this market. The 10 million bushels is also the how much the USDA reduced the soybean stocks amount last week with the marketing year end stocks data. With crush reduced by this amount the USDA is most likely increasing exports by the same amount. This will all be clarified with the monthly WASDE report coming up on Friday.
After an extended wet period with some heavy precipitation period over much of the US Corn Belt the weather forecast has changed and they are now looking at some favourable harvest weather going forward. This should allow the US farmers to ramp up harvest activities this week. There are some quality concerns going forward for both their corn and soybean crops after all their recent rains.
Locally the soybean harvest will ramp up again if the rains hold off this week. We are hearing about some solid yields being harvested with this year’s soybeans. Corn harvest is still a bit away with the plants turning colour on a daily basis.
Last week was a big negative week for our markets. Corn was down $12 per tonne on both the spot market and for this year’s harvest. For harvest 2027 corn was down $5 per tonne. Soybeans were down $15 per tonne for this year’s harvest and $8 per tonne for next year. Winter wheat was down $8 per tonne across the board and spring wheat was down $6 per tonne across the board.
