Friday was a negative day for our markets. Harvest corn closed down 4 1/2, harvest soybeans closed down 1 1/4, harvest winter wheat closed down 24 1/4 and harvest spring wheat closed down 21 3/4. In the overnight trade corn, soybeans and spring wheat are still negative with winter wheat on the positive side. Oil closed up $1.08 on Friday at $84.67 per barrel. It is weaker in trading this morning with it now priced at $79.77. Our dollar traded between a low of $0.711 US and a high of $0.714 US on Friday with it closing out at $0.713 US. It is down a bit this morning with it currently valued at $0.712 US.
New crop soybeans at one time last month were up $1.10 per bushel on the CBOT. Last week they gave back $0.44 per bushel as the weather forecast turned more favourable for crop growth. Purchases from China on Friday were not enough to drive prices higher. Weather will still have a major factor for this crop in August as it needs moisture for pod filling and we should expect to see this market respond quickly to changes in the forecast going forward.
The wheat market has closed lower 6 of the last 7 days and stayed negative on Friday. The last couple of weeks the big news for this market was bombings between Russia and Ukraine and the lack of grain shipments out of that region. Now it seems that the market is almost ignoring that and is just trying to find a price point that it is comfortable with. Managed money likely was locking in some profits on their positions on Friday and this helped to pull back prices.
Last week was a negative week for our markets even with some basis improvements. Corn prices were down $7 per tonne for both the spot market and this year’s harvest with next year’s harvest down only $2 per tonne. Soybeans were down $19 per tonne on the spot market, $23 per tonne for this year’s harvest and $9 per tonne for next year’s harvest. Winter wheat was down $12 per tonne for this year’s harvest and $7 per tonne for next year’s harvest. Spring wheat was down $7 per tonne across the board.
It will be interesting to see how the crop ratings in the US come out this afternoon. It is likely that the row crops ratings could be lower before the rain came late in the week and into the weekend. With the forecast calling for widespread rain over the US Corn Belt for the next week with some mild temperatures this will likely keep negative pressure on prices.
