Monday was a mixed day for our markets, the big gainer being soybeans. Harvest corn closed down 13 1/4, harvest soybeans closed up 21 1/2, harvest winter wheat closed down 10 and harvest spring wheat closed down 1/2. In the overnight trade everything is on the positive side. Oil closed down $0.79 yesterday at $63.17 per barrel. It is weaker in trading this morning with it now valued at $62.68 per barrel. Our dollar had a high of $0.727 US in the last 24 hours and a low of $0.724 US it is currently valued at $0.727 US.

A shock to the system yesterday after the release of the USDA’s August WASDE report. The 17 survey participates with Dow Jones had a corn yield estimate range of 181.0-188.1bpa, and USDA increase corn yield estimates even higher! Coming in at 188.8bpa, up from 181bpa in July. Adding more than 1 billion bushels to the production estimates from 15.705 bil/bu in July to 16.742bil/bu in August. A record by far for corn production. Thankfully USDA also increased corn usage by 545 mil/bu through exports, feed & residual and ethanol to account for the production and yield estimates. If they hadn’t adjusted corn usage, we could have seen a limit down day yesterday.

Soybean yields were also adjusted higher from 52.6bpa in July to 53.6bpa for August, a record yield. However, planted acres were cut down from 83.4mil acres in July to 80.9mil acres in August.

This news was bearish for corn, with the corn market down 13 1/4 cents for the day and hitting new lows yesterday afternoon after the report was released. Soybeans on the other hand gain 21 1/2 cents for the day, with the WASDE report being more bullish/friendly for this crop
