Tuesday was another mixed day for our markets. Harvest corn closed up 2 3/4, harvest soybeans closed up 4 1/2, harvest winter wheat closed down 3 and harvest spring wheat closed down 9. In the overnight trade all of our markets are on the positive side. Oil closed up $0.89 yesterday at $63.41 per barrel. It is flat in trading this morning with it now valued at $63.40 per barrel. With some choppy trading over the last 24 hours our dollar has traded between a low of $0.728 US and a high of $0.730 US. This morning it is currently valued at $0.729 US.
Corn prices closed positive yesterday for the first time in 8 trading days. We should note that prices remain below all of the 20, 50 and 100 day moving averages. No real reason for the positive close. The current wet weather forecast is seen as positive for crop growth which is negative for prices. The market was probably just due for a bounce. It is nice to see this morning that prices have remained positive.
The soybean market also closed positive yesterday after trading negative for 5 of the last 6 trading days. Like the corn market prices remain below the 20, 50 ad 100 day moving averages. Prices did get some support with noise out of the White House that President Trump would be talking to President Xi sometime this week about their trade talks. Later in the day the Chinese government stated that there was no current discussions to have the two leaders speak to each other.
I have recently been reading a lot of different articles about production out of Ukraine this year. Although total planted acres are roughly the same this year as last year yesterday a report out of the Ukraine Agriculture Minister stated that total production could be down by up to 10%. The decrease is somewhat related to the war with Russia but production levels are forecasted to decrease due to the varied weather Ukrainian farmers have been dealing with since the fall seeded crops were planted.
